Anthropic Adds Claude Personal Finance Tool to Analyze Spending

Anthropic on Thursday introduced a new beta tool for Claude called Personal Finance, designed to help users understand and track their money by connecting directly to bank and credit card accounts through Plaid. The tool allows users to ask questions about their balances, spending, transactions, and financial patterns in plain language, while Anthropic emphasized that access is read-only and cannot be used to move, manage, or invest money. With the launch, Anthropic is positioning Claude as a financial companion that can provide individualized answers based on a user’s own account data rather than generic advice. Users could ask questions such as where their money went in a given month, whether spending is higher than usual, or whether they are spending more than they earn. Claude can summarize and categorize transactions across connected accounts, highlight unusual charges, identify duplicate charges, flag unexpected fees, and track steadily increasing bills. It can also explain financial terms such as annual percentage rate and calculate how much interest a user has paid over a set period. Anthropic said Personal Finance gives users answers drawn from connected bank accounts, account names and types, account numbers’ last four digits, balances, credit limits, and up to two years of transaction history. The company also said conversations held within the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models. Anthropic further noted that the tool will not show ads, provide sponsored recommendations, or promote its own credit cards, loans, or savings products. The feature begins rolling out this week in beta to Claude users on the Pro, Max, and Ultra plans in the United States. The release places Anthropic more directly in competition with OpenAI, which introduced similar personal finance capabilities to ChatGPT in May that also allow users to link financial accounts and ask questions about spending, budgeting, and longer-term financial planning. The move also reflects Anthropic’s broader effort to expand Claude into specialized verticals. Earlier this year, the company launched Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services, signaling a push to tailor the assistant to professional and regulated domains. Personal Finance extends that strategy into consumer finance, where Anthropic is seeking to combine large language model analysis with real-time personal account data while positioning the tool as useful but constrained by read-only access and stated privacy controls.
