Meta Threads Head Discusses Growth, AI Policy, and Promoting Muse
Meta Threads chief Connor Hayes outlined the platform’s evolution and the company’s strategic pivot in promoting its new AI agent, Muse, during a recent interview at Meta’s headquarters. Since its 2023 launch, Threads has grown to 500 million monthly active users, marking a significant transition from a standalone experiment to a core social product. Operational control of the platform has now fully transitioned from Instagram head Adam Mosseri to Hayes. Hayes emphasized that Threads achieved scale by expanding rather than merely cannibalizing existing markets. While initial acquisition targeted users seeking alternatives to other microblogging services, sustained growth came from onboarding existing Facebook and Instagram users seeking a dedicated text-based environment. The platform is now cultivating specialized communities around niche interests, operating as a hybrid of public conversation, direct messaging, and topic-driven forums. This cross-platform promotion model is now serving as the blueprint for Muse. Unlike Threads, which leverages user-generated content to drive discovery through integrated social feeds, Muse requires a fundamentally different engagement strategy. Without an established content ecosystem to anchor recommendations, Meta is developing targeted promotional units that highlight specific utility cases tailored to user interests. Rather than showcasing raw AI outputs, the company is focusing on demonstrating practical applications to drive adoption through demonstrated value rather than content virality. Regarding AI-generated material, Threads applies Meta’s existing labeling protocols to identify synthetic content but maintains a hands-off approach to content policing. Hayes noted that while the platform acknowledges the utility of AI tools for content enhancement, the community’s long-term health depends on authentic human interaction. The company expects user-driven dialogue to ultimately prevail over automated posts, prioritizing transparency over restrictive enforcement. The strategic alignment between Threads and Muse reflects Meta’s broader effort to integrate artificial intelligence across its social ecosystem while preserving the engagement models that have proven successful. By adapting proven acquisition tactics to AI-driven products, Meta aims to establish Muse as a practical utility, ensuring smoother integration into daily digital routines.
