Databricks Acquires Row Zero, Plans Further Startup Acquisitions

Databricks announced Thursday the acquisition of Row Zero, an early-stage cloud spreadsheet startup, as it continues to accelerate its artificial intelligence and data infrastructure expansion. The move addresses a specific enterprise need: Row Zero enables cloud-native spreadsheet operations that scale beyond one million live rows, a capability Databricks leadership identified as critical for modern business intelligence workflows. Under the integration plan, Row Zero will operate alongside Databricks Genie, the company proprietary natural-language AI agent. This combination allows business analysts to interact with enterprise data through familiar spreadsheet interfaces and formulas while keeping sensitive information securely within Databricks cloud storage. The architecture eliminates the need to export data to disconnected tools, preserving security and governance. CEO Ali Ghodsi emphasized the strategic alignment, noting that merging business intelligence, AI agents, and spreadsheet interfaces represents a natural evolution for enterprise analytics. Row Zero was founded by former Amazon Web Services and Tableau engineers and secured $10 million in funding in May 2025 at an estimated $40 million valuation. Financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed. The deal aligns with Databricks broader 2026 expansion strategy, following a series of strategic purchases. In March, the company acquired Quotient AI and SiftD.ai to strengthen AI agent evaluation and interactive notebook capabilities. June saw the acquisition of Panther, an AI security operations center firm previously valued at $1.4 billion, while a recent purchase of Electric adds a lightweight local Postgres database optimized for edge and device-running AI agents. Supported by a recent $5 billion funding round and currently operating at a $7 billion annualized revenue run rate, Databricks has positioned itself as an aggressive consolidator in the data and AI stack. Ghodsi confirmed the company intends to pursue additional acquisitions in the near term, signaling that Row Zero is part of a deliberate portfolio strategy rather than an isolated transaction. The acquisition strengthens Databricks immediate AI and analytics capabilities while reinforcing its long-term vision of unifying enterprise data, intelligent automation, and familiar user interfaces under a single secure cloud platform.
