Agentic AI Joins SETI Search for Extraterrestrial Signals

Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute have integrated agentic AI into the search for extraterrestrial intelligence at the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California, enabling autonomous agents to steer antennas, calibrate instruments, correct incoming data and apply AI models through natural-language prompts. The system, built on the NVIDIA Holoscan platform and CyberEther signal-processing framework using CUDA-X libraries, processes streaming radio-telescope data directly on GPUs, handling up to 2.4 terabits per second on NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs with inference running next to the instrument. The web-based Nexus orchestrator gives agents a unified view of instrument state, compute resources and pipelines, allowing researchers to monitor packet loss, read live spectrograms and rewrite signal-processing blocks by prompting. This architecture compresses tasks that would otherwise take human operators weeks or years into hours, making the search faster and more adaptable for identifying potentially interesting signals in enormous volumes of telescope data. The pipeline has already achieved real-time AI detection of a pulsar in the Crab Nebula, demonstrating its ability to identify rapidly changing astrophysical sources during observation. Andrew Siemion, Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI at the SETI Institute and principal investigator of Breakthrough Listen, said the development represents a breakthrough in translation, noting that agentic observatories may find signals more analogous to their own AI-driven systems than to human expectations, especially if extraterrestrial civilizations possess advanced AI technologies far older than humanity. The team is now evaluating open models such as NVIDIA Nemotron for scenarios requiring data locality, rapid turnaround or eventual offline operation, including potential use on lunar observatories.
