Anthropic Fable 5 Trails OpenAI GPT-5.6 Sol in July Business Spend

Ramp July AI Index reveals a growing divergence between enterprise adoption rates and actual spending on artificial intelligence models among US businesses. Tracking financial data from over 70,000 corporate clients, the index indicates that while Anthropic maintains a slight lead in adoption, OpenAI captured a larger share of premium AI expenditure. In July, Anthropic’s Fable 5 model generated only 75 percent of the revenue produced by OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol. Despite this spending gap, 43.5 percent of Ramp’s surveyed businesses utilized Anthropic services, compared to 39.7 percent for OpenAI. Google registered at 6.2 percent, a figure likely understated due to embedded Workspace integrations, while xAI accounted for 4 percent. Enterprise AI expenditure is accelerating at a pace that outpaces user growth. The top 1 percent of AI spenders allocated a median of $7,400 per employee for AI tools in July, a marked increase from just under $5,000 in June. Across the broader sample, median spending rose to approximately $12 per employee from $11. Ramp economist Ara Kharazian attributed this rapid cost escalation to the deployment of autonomous AI agents, particularly in software development. Coding agents operate at a scale that typical enterprise software cannot match, triggering cascading tasks that exponentially increase compute costs. While Chinese open-source models are gaining traction among developers, they have not yet disrupted the commercial spending patterns of top-tier AI providers. The spending dynamics carry strategic implications for Anthropic as it prepares for a public offering. The company’s IPO roadmap relies on a premium pricing model that rewards state-of-the-art capabilities over cheaper alternatives. Fable 5’s commercial launch was hampered by regulatory interventions and subsequent pricing adjustments, complicating its market positioning against OpenAI’s more affordable GPT-5.6 Sol. The data suggests that while businesses are experimenting with Anthropic’s interface and capabilities, budget constraints are steering immediate revenue toward OpenAI’s cost-efficient offerings. Industry analysts note that the current spending trajectory highlights a shift from experimental AI integration to scalable agent-driven workflows. As organizations move beyond basic prompting toward automated multi-step operations, infrastructure costs will likely continue climbing. The July metrics underscore a maturing enterprise AI market where adoption breadth no longer guarantees spending dominance. Companies will need to balance model performance, operational scalability, and cost management to sustain growth as AI agents become embedded in core business processes.
