Tesla Video Shows Robotaxi Avoiding Collisions With Waymo and Avride
Tesla published a video compilation showing its robotaxi operating in real-world driving conditions while avoiding hazards and rival autonomous vehicles, as the company makes a public case for the safety of its self-driving fleet ahead of its third-quarter earnings call. The clips, posted on a website created for Tesla’s robotaxi safety report, depict the company’s cars handling stormy weather, pedestrians crossing at a green light, stray animals and other robotaxis obstructing the roadway. Tesla Vice President of AI Ashok Elluswamy also shared the footage on X, describing it as Robotaxi B-roll. The video includes a moment in which a Tesla robotaxi stops in its lane after a Waymo vehicle makes an unusually wide right turn and briefly encroaches into Tesla’s lane before returning to its path. In another nighttime clip, a Tesla robotaxi brakes after an Avride vehicle pulls into its lane from the right. Avride operates robotaxi rides in Dallas through Uber and is testing services in Austin with a safety driver. Spokespeople for Waymo and Avride did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The release comes as Tesla attempts to highlight autonomous-driving safety despite lagging behind rivals in mileage. Tesla says its robotaxi service has accumulated 3.3 million autonomous miles, compared with more than 271 million miles logged by Waymo as of June. Tesla began offering a limited number of driverless rides without an in-car safety monitor in Austin in January and said during its earnings call that it plans to launch unsupervised Cybercab service in Dallas in November.
