Google and World Bank Launch AI-Powered Digital Infrastructure Initiative for Emerging Markets
Google and the World Bank Group have announced a new partnership aimed at accelerating digital transformation in emerging markets. The collaboration focuses on building AI-powered public digital infrastructure to improve access to essential services for underserved populations. At the core of the initiative is the deployment of Open Network Stacks—modular, interoperable digital frameworks that function as foundational infrastructure for public services. By integrating Google Cloud’s advanced AI capabilities, including its Gemini models, with the World Bank Group’s deep development expertise, the project enables governments to rapidly design and scale digital systems tailored to local needs. These AI-driven networks will support critical sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and workforce skilling, allowing citizens to access vital information and services in over 40 languages. Importantly, the platforms are designed to work efficiently on basic smartphones and low-bandwidth devices, ensuring inclusivity for users with limited connectivity or technological resources. The initiative builds on a successful pro bono pilot in Uttar Pradesh, India, where AI-powered tools helped thousands of smallholder farmers access real-time market data, weather forecasts, and best practices—resulting in measurable improvements in crop yields and income. To support long-term sustainability and open innovation, Google.org is providing funding to Networks for Humanity (NFH), a new nonprofit organization. NFH will lead efforts to develop universal digital infrastructure using open standards like the Beckn Protocol and Finternet asset tokenization. The nonprofit will also establish regional innovation labs and pilot social impact applications across multiple countries. This collaboration represents a significant step toward creating equitable, scalable, and open digital ecosystems that empower governments and communities in emerging economies to harness the benefits of AI while maintaining control over their digital futures.
