Disney Hires Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand as First CTO
Disney has appointed Karandeep Anand as its first-ever companywide Chief Technology Officer, a strategic move designed to consolidate enterprise technology, artificial intelligence, and product engineering under unified leadership. Announced by CEO Josh D'Amaro in an internal memo on Friday, the appointment marks a pivotal step in the company's ongoing executive restructuring as D'Amaro approaches his six-month anniversary. Anand will officially assume his role on October 2 and report directly to D'Amaro. In this capacity, Anand will oversee all enterprise technology, infrastructure, data architecture, AI platforms, and engineering teams across Disney's business segments. D'Amaro stated that the hire directly advances the One Disney initiative, which seeks to streamline cross-company operations and position technology as a foundational enabler of creative storytelling. The CTO appointment follows a broader leadership shuffle announced earlier this week, which included Adam Smith's promotion to lead the streaming division and Joe Earley's transition to oversee franchise and content strategy for Disney Entertainment. Anand arrives with a track record of scaling consumer AI platforms and enterprise infrastructure. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Character.AI, a generative artificial intelligence startup that experienced rapid user growth under his direction. Earlier last year, Disney issued a cease-and-desist order to the company regarding the unauthorized use of copyrighted intellectual property in AI-generated content, a legal directive Character.AI promptly implemented. Before his tenure at Character.AI, Anand held senior leadership positions at Meta and Microsoft, where he spent over fifteen years contributing to the foundational development of the Azure cloud computing platform. According to D'Amaro, Anand's selection reflects a deliberate emphasis on merging technical rigor with product strategy and user trust. His immediate mandate will focus on modernizing Disney's technology delivery frameworks, expanding enterprise AI and data capabilities, and ensuring that infrastructure investments directly accelerate creative production and operational efficiency. The appointment underscores Disney's strategic pivot toward leveraging artificial intelligence and cloud-native architecture as primary drivers of future competitive advantage in the global entertainment sector.
