Privacy-Focused AI Assistant Ollie Shuts Down

Ollie, a privacy-focused AI assistant startup, announced it will shut down on November 6, marking an abrupt end for a company that had positioned itself as a privacy-conscious alternative in a rapidly growing assistant market. Co-founder and CEO Bill Lennon said on X on Friday that the text-based assistant would officially close, adding that the team had built what he called an incredible personal assistant with a small staff. The company had raised a $7.5 million seed round led by Khosla Ventures and offered a subscription service designed to help families stay connected and organized. Ollie connected to users’ email and calendars and included features for appointment booking, meal planning, and bill payments, with plans to expand into household budgeting. It was also notable for achieving SOC 2, a privacy compliance standard verified through an independent audit, placing it among the first mainstream assistant apps to do so. Lennon said the competitive pressures of the AI assistant market ultimately outweighed the company’s privacy-focused strengths. As more powerful models made digital assistants more capable, demand surged, but competition also intensified with new entrants such as Muse and Instinct. He said Ollie got close but could not keep up with the pace of growth, differentiation, and fundraising required to continue. Customers will receive instructions for exporting their data and obtaining refunds in the coming days.
