Anthropic Launches Rupee Pricing for Claude in India.

Anthropic has initiated the localization of Claude subscription pricing for India, marking a strategic expansion into the country, which represents the model's second-largest market globally after the United States with approximately 5.8 percent of total usage. The move introduces rupee-denominated pricing directly on Claude's website and mobile applications, addressing longstanding user friction caused by dollar-based billing and currency conversion fees. Current plans include Claude Pro at 2,000 rupees per month when billed annually, Claude Max starting at 11,999 rupees monthly, and Team subscriptions at 2,399 rupees per seat monthly. All listed rates incorporate applicable local taxes, though mobile application pricing exhibits minor variations. Despite the localized currency display, Anthropic has not yet integrated India's Unified Payments Interface, leaving subscribers to rely on credit cards or Apple and Google app store billing systems, a notable contrast to competitors like OpenAI, which enabled UPI support for ChatGPT earlier this year. The pricing adjustment aligns with Anthropic's broader operational footprint in India. Following a public announcement in October, the company established a Bengaluru office in February and appointed former Microsoft India managing director Irina Ghose to oversee domestic commercial operations. Recent enterprise partnerships with major IT services providers Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services further underscore Anthropic's intent to scale AI deployments within India's rapidly growing technology sector. However, regional expansion has encountered distribution hurdles. In June, Anthropic temporarily restricted access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-U.S. entities, prompting domestic developers and startup founders to evaluate alternative AI frameworks. While access to Fable 5 has since been restored, restrictions on Mythos 5 remain partially in place. India's artificial intelligence landscape presents both substantial opportunity and commercial complexity. The nation's extensive pool of software engineers and developers drives high platform adoption, yet converting free-tier engagement into paid subscriptions remains challenging due to pronounced price sensitivity. Anthropic has not publicly commented on the pricing rollout or the ongoing payment gateway limitations. As global artificial intelligence providers increasingly tailor commercial strategies to capture market share in the world's most populous country, localized billing infrastructure and competitive pricing will likely dictate sustained user retention and enterprise adoption across the region.
