FAA Clarifies AI Tool Scope, Eases Airline Concerns
The Federal Aviation Administration is poised to launch the Strategic Management of Airspace Routing Trajectories, or SMART, an artificial intelligence system designed to optimize airspace routing and mitigate flight congestion. Developed by Boston-based Air Space Intelligence under a 12-year, $875 million modernization contract, the tool marks a significant step in the agency’s efforts to upgrade national air traffic control infrastructure following a series of high-profile aviation incidents. Initial announcements sparked considerable anxiety among major carriers, who feared aggressive AI integration could disrupt scheduling, trigger widespread cancellations, and complicate controller workflows. Concerns peaked in mid-September, prompting Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford to hold direct meetings with the CEOs of United, American, Delta, and Southwest Airlines. The discussions clarified that SMART will operate strictly as an advisory system. Rather than replacing human decision-making or altering established procedures, the software will generate alternative flight paths and congestion forecasts, transmitting recommendations through the FAA’s existing command infrastructure. Controllers will retain final authority, evaluating AI suggestions alongside traditional data before routing aircraft. The immediate deployment phase will be geographically and functionally restricted. Over a 90-day testing window beginning this month, SMART will focus on managing traffic across the three primary airports serving the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The system’s core advantage lies in predictive analytics; instead of reacting to real-time weather and traffic conditions, SMART projects future airspace bottlenecks, enabling proactive rerouting to minimize delays and keep sectors open longer. Bedford emphasized that this initial period will prioritize validating predictive accuracy and building carrier confidence before any expanded implementation.
