Claude Enforces Age Verification for 18+ Users

Anthropic has implemented a comprehensive age assurance framework for its consumer AI assistant, Claude, mandating that all users be at least 18 years old. The policy requires age confirmation during account registration, supplemented by automated detection systems designed to identify accounts exhibiting characteristics of minor usage. When these signals are triggered, access is temporarily suspended pending verification. To restore access, users must complete a verification process facilitated by Yoti, an independently audited third-party compliance platform operating under SOC2 standards. The system supports multiple verification pathways, including facial age estimation via a selfie without document submission, standard government-issued ID photo uploads, or digital attribute sharing through the Yoti application. Upon successful verification, the affected account is promptly reinstated. Emphasizing data privacy, Anthropic has structured the verification workflow to ensure it never receives or stores sensitive personal information. Yoti retains facial images, identification documents, and associated metadata only until the age confirmation is processed, at which point all records are permanently deleted. Anthropic systems are limited exclusively to a binary pass or fail notification, minimizing data exposure and aligning with stringent regulatory expectations for age-gated digital services. The initiative establishes a clear operational standard for adolescent access to generative AI tools while reinforcing user privacy protocols.
