Meta Helps Parents Understand Teenagers' Conversations With AI

Meta has launched new tools designed to help parents monitor and understand the conversations their teenagers are having with the company's AI assistant. Announced in October, these insights are now available to supervising parents in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Brazil, with a global rollout scheduled for the coming weeks. Parents using supervision features on Facebook, Messenger, or Instagram will find a new Insights tab within the app and on the web. This feature provides a weekly overview of the topics teens have asked Meta AI about, categorized into areas such as School, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Travel, Writing, and Health and Wellbeing. Within each main category, parents can explore sub-topics, such as fitness and mental health under Health and Wellbeing, or fashion and holidays under Lifestyle. While the system does not display specific message content, it offers visibility into general inquiry patterns. Meta plans to refine these insights based on ongoing feedback from parents and experts. These updates complement existing safety protections built into Meta AI for Teen Accounts, which adhere to a 13+ rating standard. The AI is designed to avoid age-inappropriate responses and may redirect users to resources rather than answering certain questions. Parents will still see the topic of the inquiry even if the AI did not provide a direct answer. For more sensitive situations, Meta is developing proactive alerts. The company recently announced plans to notify parents if a teen engages in conversations with Meta AI regarding suicide or self-harm. Specific details regarding these alerts will be shared at a later date. Beyond conversation monitoring, these features expand upon existing parental supervision capabilities, which include setting time limits, scheduling breaks, and viewing a list of chat partners over the last seven days. Meta reported that the number of US teens enrolled in supervision has more than doubled since last year. To assist parents in discussing AI usage with their teens, Meta collaborated with the Cyberbullying Research Center to create conversation starters. These are open-ended questions with guidance on how to approach the topics, available on the Family Center website and accessible via the new Insights tab. Additionally, Meta introduced the AI Wellbeing Expert Council to provide ongoing expert input on AI experiences for teenagers. The council comprises members from existing advisory groups focused on suicide prevention, youth development, and body image, along with new members specializing in responsible and ethical AI from institutions such as the University of Michigan and the University of Southern California. The council will meet regularly with Meta teams to review product updates and inform policy decisions, having already contributed to the development of the new parental insights announced today.
