Google completes acquisition of Mechanize talent as over ten employees join DeepMind

Google has completed a talent acquisition deal with San Francisco-based AI startup Mechanize. Public employment records show that Mechanize co-founder and former CEO Tamay Besiroglu has joined Google DeepMind as a Research Scientist; more than ten other former employees have also moved to Google, most of whom will be involved in mid-training work. Neither Google nor Besiroglu commented on the matter. Mid-training sits between pre-training and post-training phases and can be used to reinforce specific capabilities such as coding and reasoning. Mechanize primarily develops reinforcement learning environments to help train and evaluate AI models on real-world software engineering tasks, potentially bolstering Google’s competitiveness in AI programming. The company secured $9.1 million in funding earlier this year at a post-money valuation of $500 million; previously, Besiroglu had also participated in founding Epoch AI, an organization focused on evaluating large language models. Earlier reports by Business Insider stated that Google had negotiated to acquire Mechanize’s technologies and talent for over $1.5 billion, but neither the final transaction amount nor its structure was disclosed. Mechanize did not cease operations entirely; its former Chief of Staff Guive Assadi now lists himself as the company’s CEO. In recent years, Google has frequently employed such talent acquisitions to rapidly absorb critical teams while typically facing less antitrust scrutiny compared to full corporate takeovers; similarly, Varun Mohan, formerly CEO of Windsurf, recently joined Google under comparable arrangements to lead Antigravity, an agent programming project.
