Meta's Reality Labs adopts AI-native pods for efficiency
Meta is reorganizing its Reality Labs division by shifting to an AI-native structure, rebranding employees as "AI builders" and forming small, cross-functional teams known as pods. This internal overhaul, detailed in a leaked memo obtained by Business Insider, affects approximately 1,000 staff members within the division responsible for building developer tools. The move aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's broader strategy to utilize small teams and leverage artificial intelligence to enhance operational efficiency. Under the new framework, every employee in the division will adopt one of three specific titles: AI Builder, AI Pod Lead, or AI Org Lead. This change is designed to flatten the organizational hierarchy and encourage greater collaboration. AI builders are organized into small pods focused on specific outcomes, often working across traditional disciplinary boundaries. For instance, engineers may take on design tasks depending on project requirements. The ultimate goal, according to the memo, is to drive a step change in engineering productivity and product quality by fundamentally rewiring how the team operates and supports one another. Leadership structures have also been redefined. Pods are managed by AI Pod Leads who oversee daily operations, while AI Org Leads manage performance reviews and promotions. These management processes will be supported by unspecified AI systems. Despite the structural changes, the memo confirms that the overall team size within this pilot program will remain unchanged. The restructuring is part of a larger vision articulated by Zuckerberg earlier this year, who predicted that by 2026, AI will dramatically change how work is performed. He suggested that projects previously requiring large teams could potentially be executed by a single highly skilled individual. Some employees have already begun adopting the "AI builder" title on professional social media platforms. The announcement of this reorganization coincides with Meta's recent announcement of layoffs that affected hundreds of staff, including some within Reality Labs. However, a Meta spokesperson clarified that the new pod structure is not related to the workforce reductions. This initiative serves as a pilot program intended to test whether AI-augmented, small-team models can successfully improve output and quality before potentially expanding to other parts of the company. The shift represents a significant attempt to future-proof Meta's development workflows against the evolving capabilities of artificial intelligence.
