OpenAI adds bank linking to ChatGPT for personal finance
OpenAI has launched a new suite of personal finance tools for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States, allowing users to connect bank accounts for detailed spending analysis and financial planning. The service, currently in preview, was released on a Friday and enables access to over 12,000 financial institutions, including major players like Chase, Fidelity, Robinhood, and Capital One. To manage these secure connections, OpenAI partnered with Plaid, which handles the authentication and data synchronization required to display portfolio performance, subscription costs, and upcoming payments in a dedicated dashboard. The development of this feature follows OpenAI's acquisition in April of Hiro, a personal finance startup supported by investors such as Ribbit Capital and General Catalyst. While OpenAI credited the Hiro team's expertise for aiding the launch, the company did not confirm if the entire product was built by the acquired team. Users can activate the service by selecting the Finances option in the sidebar or by prompting the chatbot to link accounts. The integration guides users through the connection process and aims to support Intuit in the near future, which will allow for more complex analyses like tax impacts from stock sales or credit approval probabilities. According to OpenAI, more than 200 million users already ask the chatbot financial questions monthly. To ensure accuracy in this domain, the company leveraged its new GPT-5.5 model, which demonstrates improved reasoning capabilities. OpenAI also collaborated with finance experts to create a benchmark specifically for personal finance queries. This enables the AI to provide tailored advice, such as identifying recent spending changes or creating a five-year plan for purchasing a home. Data privacy remains a key consideration for the tool. Users retain full control to disconnect services or remove specific account connections via the Settings menu. OpenAI states that once a service is disconnected, the associated data is purged from ChatGPT within 30 days. Additionally, users can view and delete financial memories stored by the AI through the Finances page. This launch aligns with a broader industry trend where AI companies are moving beyond generalized chatbots to offer specialized tools for sensitive sectors like health and finance. Competitors such as Anthropic and Perplexity have recently introduced similar health and financial research products. OpenAI plans to make the finance tools available on both the web and iOS for Pro users first, gathering feedback before potentially expanding access to Plus subscribers.
