OpenAI reportedly spends $7 billion on employee share buyback

According to Bloomberg reports, OpenAI has completed an employee share tender offer valued at $7 billion, repurchasing company stock from current and former employees. The transaction follows the valuation used in the firm’s financing round earlier this year, which set a post-money valuation of $852 billion. OpenAI has not publicly commented on the deal. For tech companies that have remained private for extended periods, such share tenders allow employees to sell portions of their equity before going public, converting stock-based compensation into cash while avoiding immediate disclosure requirements and regulatory costs associated with being a public entity. This particular transaction involves direct buybacks by OpenAI rather than introducing external investors as buyers. In March this year, OpenAI secured $122 billion in funding, followed by the confidential submission of its S-1 registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June in preparation for a potential IPO. However, the company explicitly stated at the time that it had not yet decided on a listing timeline, noting that some matters might be easier to advance under private status. Therefore, the latest share tender can be viewed as a signal that an imminent IPO is unlikely, though it does not necessarily prove that any existing plans have been delayed. CEO Sam Altman previously acknowledged that the company’s performance over the past 12 months was less than optimal. As OpenAI adjusts its investment focus and strengthens its enterprise business operations, these developments will continue to influence the timing of its eventual public offering.
