Intel and Google Reach Multi-Year Partnership to Advance AI and Cloud Infrastructure Development

On April 6, 2026, Intel and Google announced a multi-year partnership agreement to continue deploying the Intel Xeon platform in future AI and cloud computing infrastructure. This collaboration involves both Intel's upcoming Xeon CPUs and custom-designed Infrastructure Processing Units (IPUs) jointly developed by Intel and Google. While this marks the growing prevalence of custom Arm architecture processors in AI workloads, Intel maintains competitiveness across multiple domains. Tan Lip-Bu, Intel CEO, stated, "Scaling AI requires more than accelerators—it demands balanced systems. CPUs and IPUs are critical for delivering the performance, efficiency, and flexibility needed for modern AI workloads." Currently, Google extensively utilizes Intel Xeon 5 and Xeon 6 processors across its large-scale AI training, low-latency inference, and general-purpose computing workloads. Notably, Intel's latest Xeon CPUs power C4 and N4 instances. Although Google's self-developed Axion processor based on the Armv9 architecture offers advantages in cost-effective control, Google data centers still rely on Intel Xeon CPUs to meet requirements for x86 backward compatibility and maximum single-thread performance. Both companies believe these needs will persist for years, leading to this strategic partnership. To enhance Intel Xeon platform efficiency within Google's hyperscale datacenters, Google will co-develop customized IPUs with Intel to offload network, storage, and security functions from host CPUs. Ultimately, combining the high single-thread performance of the x86 architecture with tailored IPU capabilities will strengthen the competitive position of the Xeon platform in Google's highly customized environments. Amin Vahdat, Senior Vice President of Google AI Infrastructure, noted, "CPUs and infrastructure acceleration remain foundational pillars of AI systems—from training coordination to inference and deployment." This announcement coincides with a pivotal moment as global cloud computing and AI platform developers accelerate adoption of custom CPUs built on the Arm instruction set architecture. According to Counterpoint Research's latest report, by 2029, 90% of AI servers will utilize custom silicon processors, predominantly based on the Arm architecture. The Intel-Google partnership underscores that Xeon CPUs and customized IPUs will continue supporting demanding workloads like AI over the coming years.
