Meta AI Downloads Surge into Top Six as New Models Drive Global User Growth
Data from market research firm Sensor Tower shows that Meta's AI assistant app has recently seen significant growth, recording an all-time high in daily active web visits in the United States while iOS downloads reached approximately 46,000—a sharp increase of 87% compared to the previous day. As of Thursday evening this week, the app climbed to sixth place on the U.S. Apple App Store free chart, marking a substantial rise from its average ranking of 65th over the prior month. This surge extends beyond the U.S. market alone. According to Sensor Tower, the app achieved sequential download increases of 51%, 32%, 27%, and 25% on iOS across major markets including Canada, the UK, France, and Germany, indicating rising global user engagement. Analysts attribute this wave of growth closely to Muse Spark, Meta's latest released AI model. Developed by Meta's "Super Intelligence Lab," it represents the first product launched after a comprehensive upgrade to Meta's AI strategy. In recent years, Meta has consistently increased investments in artificial intelligence, including a $14 billion investment in Scale AI and the recruitment of Alex Alexandr Wang, co-founder of Scale AI, to strengthen its technical capabilities and talent pool. A Sensor Tower analyst noted that before this breakout performance, Meta's AI application had failed to rank within the top ten of the U.S. App Store for more than 90 days, having previously peaked at second position shortly after its initial release in April 2025. This dramatic jump in rankings reflects intensifying competition in the generative AI sector. Currently, consumer-facing AI applications have become a critical driver of growth in app stores. Among the six most-downloaded free apps on the U.S. App Store, four are related to AI. Google Gemini ranks fifth, Claude holds third place, and ChatGPT currently sits at number two. Industry insiders believe Meta's recent performance demonstrates how AI companies are leveraging product launches and marketing campaigns to create viral moments as they compete for users in the generative AI space dominated by ChatGPT.
