Musk and Altman Engage in Public Clash on X Over Apple's Lawsuit Alleging OpenAI Stole Trade Secrets

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX founder Elon Musk resumed their public dispute over the weekend, escalating tensions following Apple’s recent litigation against OpenAI. The lawsuit, filed Friday, alleges that OpenAI, its hardware partner io, and two former Apple engineers misappropriated proprietary technology. The legal action follows OpenAI’s acquisition of io, the product design firm established by former Apple executive Jony Ive, as the artificial intelligence company expands into consumer hardware. OpenAI issued a brief statement denying any interest in competing firms’ intellectual property. The development immediately drew Musk’s attention, prompting a renewed barrage of criticism on social media. Musk repeatedly referred to Altman as Scam Altman, alleging that OpenAI had previously deceived investors regarding its nonprofit origins and now sought to appropriate Apple’s device architecture. Altman responded by defending his company’s technical trajectory, noting that recent benchmarks position its latest model, 5.6 sol, as a global leader. He framed Musk’s renewed scrutiny as indirect validation of OpenAI’s performance, while countering that Musk was overpromising on near-term data center deployments. Musk dismissed the comparison, emphasizing his organization’s immediate focus on aerospace operations. The exchange revives a longstanding rivalry between the two executives. Both men co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but their partnership deteriorated amid disputes over corporate governance, funding structures, and strategic direction. Their conflict culminated in a 2024 lawsuit filed by Musk, who accused OpenAI, Altman, and former president Greg Brockman of breaching their original charitable mission by transitioning to a for-profit model. A federal jury rejected Musk’s claims in May, and he has indicated plans to appeal. Meanwhile, Musk launched rival artificial intelligence firm xAI in 2023, which now operates under the SpaceX umbrella. The latest legal and public relations clash underscores the intensifying competition within the artificial intelligence sector, where corporate maneuvering, hardware expansion, and benchmark validation increasingly intersect with executive rivalries. Both firms continue to navigate complex regulatory environments while vying for dominance in foundational models and consumer-grade applications.
