Google AI Satellite Sends First Response from Space to Earth
Google said on Friday that its satellite equipped with Tensor Processing Units has successfully transmitted its first response from space, marking a milestone in Project Suncatcher, an experimental effort to develop AI-capable computing infrastructure in orbit. The test involved booting the satellite’s TPUs and prompting an on-board Gemma 4 model to generate a space-themed haiku, alongside additional limericks and telemetry-based prompts. The satellite was launched earlier this month and represents an initial validation step for running AI workloads beyond Earth. Google positioned the demonstration as a feasibility check for future orbital data centers, saying it will next evaluate how the TPUs perform under thermal stress and radiation exposure in space. Reliable operation in orbit would support the company’s next objective: launching twin interconnected satellites in 2027. The result underscores growing interest in applying advanced AI chips and large language models to space-based computing, where power, cooling, radiation and connectivity remain major technical constraints.
