Todoist Launches AI-Powered Voice-to-Tasks Feature Ramble, Letting Users Add Tasks by Speaking

Todoist, the popular task management app developed by Doist, has introduced a new AI-powered feature called Todoist Ramble, allowing users to add tasks to their to-do list simply by speaking. Designed to capture ideas on the go, Ramble turns natural, conversational speech into structured tasks with minimal effort. The feature works by listening to users as they speak, whether they’re walking, driving, or multitasking. Instead of typing, users tap the Ramble icon and begin talking. The app processes the spoken words in real time, extracting key details like task descriptions, due dates, priorities, duration, and assignees. It can also respond to follow-up instructions, such as “Actually, make that Thursday” or “that’s all,” enabling dynamic adjustments during the conversation. Ramble is powered by large language models, specifically Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Live model, hosted through Vertex AI. As audio streams from the device, the system transcribes speech and identifies relevant task components, transforming them into organized entries in the user’s list. The entire process happens in real time, with no delay. Doist emphasizes that user privacy is a priority. Audio input is not stored on servers and is not used for AI training. The app is also SOC2 Type II certified, ensuring strong security and data protection standards. The functionality aligns with a broader trend in AI-driven productivity tools. Similar features are appearing in wearable devices like Amazon’s Bee, which uses AI to generate notes and to-dos, and Plaud’s devices, which summarize meetings and highlight action items. AI smart rings from companies like Sandbar and Pebble’s upcoming Index 01 also aim to streamline task creation through quick gestures. Ramble was first tested in a beta with around 150,000 active users in the Todoist Experimental program. Over three weeks, these testers completed nearly 290,000 Ramble sessions across desktop and mobile. Task creation success rates rose from about 40% in October to approximately 62% by December, and the feature contributed to a significant increase in upgrades—new users on the free plan were upgrading at roughly five times the previous rate. Todoist Ramble is now available to all users on iOS, Android, desktop, and web, supporting 38 languages. The feature is accessible to all users, but free (Beginner) plan users receive a limited number of monthly sessions. Pro and Business plan subscribers enjoy unlimited access. For convenience, users can enable Ramble via Home Screen or Lock Screen shortcuts on iOS, and through app shortcuts, widgets, and quick settings tiles on Android.
