OpenAI and Amazon forge $100 billion partnership to advance AI innovation, expand cloud infrastructure, and launch stateful runtime environments via AWS.

OpenAI and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) have announced a multi-year strategic partnership aimed at accelerating AI innovation for enterprises, startups, and consumers worldwide. As part of the agreement, Amazon will invest $50 billion in OpenAI, beginning with an initial $15 billion investment, with the remaining $35 billion to follow in the coming months upon fulfillment of specified conditions. The collaboration will focus on developing a Stateful Runtime Environment powered by OpenAI’s advanced models, which will be made available through Amazon Bedrock. This new runtime environment represents the next evolution in how frontier AI models are used, enabling models to maintain context, retain memory of prior interactions, seamlessly access compute resources, identity, and multiple data sources, and work across integrated software tools. Designed for complex, ongoing workflows, the Stateful Runtime Environment will allow developers to manage long-term projects with continuity and efficiency. Built to run optimally on AWS infrastructure, the environment will be deeply integrated with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and other AWS services, ensuring AI applications and agents operate cohesively with existing enterprise systems. The Stateful Runtime Environment is expected to launch within the next few months. AWS will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier, expanding access to OpenAI’s most advanced enterprise platform. Frontier enables organizations to build, deploy, and manage teams of AI agents that operate across real-world business systems with shared context, built-in governance, and enterprise-grade security—all without requiring users to manage underlying infrastructure. As companies shift from AI experimentation to production deployment, Frontier simplifies integration into existing workflows, enabling fast, secure, and scalable adoption. The partnership expands on the existing $38 billion multi-year agreement between OpenAI and AWS by adding $100 billion in new commitments over eight years. Under this expanded deal, OpenAI has committed to consuming approximately 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity through AWS infrastructure. This will support the growing demand for advanced AI workloads, including Stateful Runtime, Frontier, and other cutting-edge applications. The agreement ensures long-term compute capacity for OpenAI while enabling AWS to deploy purpose-built silicon, including the upcoming Trainium3 and next-generation Trainium4 chips. Trainium4, expected to begin delivery in 2027, will deliver substantial performance improvements, including significantly higher FP4 compute performance, increased memory bandwidth, and expanded high-bandwidth memory capacity—key advancements for scaling increasingly sophisticated AI systems. Additionally, OpenAI and Amazon will collaborate on developing customized AI models tailored for Amazon’s developers. These models will be used to enhance Amazon’s customer-facing products and AI agents, complementing the company’s existing Nova family of models. This will give Amazon teams more tools to build and deploy AI capabilities at scale across its ecosystem.
