Cohere Reaches $7B Valuation with $100M Raise, Partners with AMD for Enterprise AI Sovereignty
Cohere, the enterprise-focused AI model company, has raised an additional $100 million in a follow-on to its August funding round, pushing its valuation to $7 billion. The original $500 million round, which closed in August at a $6.8 billion valuation, was oversubscribed, and the new capital brings Cohere’s total funding to over $1 billion since its founding. In a strategic move, Cohere has also announced a new partnership with AMD, positioning itself as a key player in the growing competition between GPU suppliers. The company’s full suite of Command-family AI models—including Command Vision, Command Translate, and Command Reasoning—can now run on AMD’s Instinct GPUs, a direct competitor to Nvidia’s offerings. AMD will also use Cohere’s models internally, marking a significant endorsement from the chipmaker. Despite this collaboration, Cohere emphasized it remains committed to supporting Nvidia GPUs as well, ensuring flexibility for enterprise customers. The move underscores Cohere’s focus on providing AI solutions that prioritize data sovereignty and control—especially important for organizations concerned about regulatory compliance, data privacy, and geopolitical risks. Founded in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, one of the co-authors of the seminal transformer paper that laid the foundation for modern generative AI, Cohere was once seen as a leading contender in the AI space. However, it has since been outpaced by the rapid ascent of OpenAI and Anthropic, whose valuations now stand at $500 billion and $183 billion, respectively. Cohere has maintained a distinct focus on the enterprise market, tailoring its offerings to businesses that need localized, secure AI infrastructure. This latest funding round attracted new investors including the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and Nexxus Capital Management, a firm known for its investments in Mexico and Iberia, signaling growing international confidence in Cohere’s enterprise AI strategy. With its growing valuation and strategic partnerships, Cohere is reasserting its role as a serious player in the AI ecosystem—especially in sectors where control, compliance, and data independence are paramount.
