Chinese Tech Firms Showcase AI Agent Smartphones in Shanghai
Artificial intelligence-driven smartphones dominated recent discussions at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, marking a decisive push toward agentic mobile devices. Chinese manufacturers unveiled hardware and software ecosystems designed to automate daily tasks, ranging from food delivery to travel booking, through integrated voice and gesture-based AI assistants. The rapid development of these devices highlights both the technological momentum and the structural friction defining the current mobile AI landscape. Three primary contenders showcased distinct approaches to the agentic phone category. Nubia introduced the NaviX Ultra, a device powered by ByteDance Doubao chatbot, aiming to streamline cross-app interactions via voice commands. Honor displayed its Robot Phone, featuring a mobile, companion-centric AI system capable of interpreting gestures and stabilizing video, with Alibaba co-developed models scheduled for integration upon later release. Meanwhile, Shanghai-based startup StepFun presented the STEPX Neo, emphasizing pre-established partnerships with Alipay and Didi to enable one-stop service automation for commerce, mobility, and productivity. Despite the polished demonstrations, widespread adoption faces significant resistance from established platform ecosystems. During testing of early agentic prototypes, major Chinese tech firms including Alibaba, Tencent, and JD.com restricted third-party assistants from accessing their platforms. This defensive maneuver aimed to preserve direct consumer relationships and prevent workflow fragmentation, effectively neutralizing certain automation features until developers negotiate formal integration pathways. Analysts note that while cross-app collaboration remains a core aspiration, current AI performance remains inconsistent, and securing platform permissions is proving a formidable commercial hurdle. Industry observers agree that the market has not yet settled on a dominant architecture. Marc Einstein of Counterpoint Research emphasized that while no clear market leader has emerged, the transition away from traditional app-based interfaces is inevitable. He projected that within five to ten years, the digital economy will be fundamentally restructured as AI agents assume direct control over user interactions. Globally, developers are racing to replicate this shift, with companies like Google and Japanese startup Brain Technologies already deploying experimental agentic features.
