Jensen Huang Posts on X in Support of Open-Weight AI as Major Tech Giants Sign Joint Public Letter

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang called for support of open-weight AI in his first post on X. He stated that AI will transform every industry, and that open models help strengthen security and cyber defense, accelerate the diffusion of innovation, and enable enterprises and nations to control their own AI capabilities. Dozens of companies and organizations, including NVIDIA, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Google, Mistral, IBM, Mozilla, and the Linux Foundation, subsequently signed an open letter urging US policymakers to avoid premature restrictions on open-weight models. The signatories argued that US leadership in AI depends not just on individual frontier models but also on building an open ecosystem spanning businesses, universities, and public institutions, while reducing technological costs and vendor lock-in risks. The letter was released as White House officials accused China’s Moonshot AI of distilling Kimi K3 via Anthropic’s Fable 5, and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested possible sanctions against violating firms. While the letter did not name Moonshot AI directly, it emphasized that distillation is a widely used method for model development; illegal extraction of value from closed-source models should be addressed through targeted legal and commercial mechanisms rather than blanket restrictions on related technologies. Anthropic is currently not among the co-signers.
