Anthropic Launches Claude Haiku 4.5, a Smaller, More Affordable AI Model

Anthropic has unveiled Claude Haiku 4.5, the latest iteration of its smallest and most efficient AI model, positioning it as a high-performance, low-cost solution for a wide range of applications. The company claims Haiku 4.5 delivers performance on par with its mid-tier Sonnet 4.5 model—while operating at one-third the cost and more than twice the speed. This makes it ideal for real-time, high-volume tasks where speed and efficiency are critical. In benchmark tests, Haiku 4.5 scored 73% on SWE-Bench Verified, a rigorous coding evaluation, and 41% on Terminal-Bench, a test focused on command-line interaction. While these results trail slightly behind Sonnet 4.5, they match or exceed those of Sonnet 4, GPT-5, and Gemini 2.5 in both categories. The model also performs strongly on tool use, computer use, and visual reasoning benchmarks, demonstrating broad capabilities despite its compact size. The new version will become the default model for all free users on Anthropic’s platform, significantly expanding access to advanced AI functionality without increasing server load. For paid users, Haiku 4.5 offers a cost-effective alternative to larger models—typically one-third the price of Sonnet and one-fifth the cost of Opus—making it ideal for scalable deployments and high-throughput applications. Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer, Mike Krieger, emphasized that Haiku 4.5 enables entirely new deployment patterns in production environments. “It’s opening up entirely new categories of what’s possible with AI in production,” he said. The vision is a “complete agent toolbox,” where Sonnet handles complex planning and reasoning, while Haiku-powered sub-agents execute tasks rapidly and in parallel. This division of labor could revolutionize how AI systems manage long-term projects, such as monitoring live data streams or automating repetitive workflows. One of the most immediate use cases is in software development. With tools like Claude Code already popular among developers, Haiku 4.5’s speed and efficiency make it particularly valuable for reducing latency in coding tasks. Zencoder CEO Andrew Filev described the model as “unlocking an entirely new set of use cases,” highlighting its potential to accelerate development cycles. The release of Haiku 4.5 follows a rapid succession of major launches: Sonnet 4.5 in September and Opus 4.1 in August. This aggressive pace reflects Anthropic’s strategy to stay competitive with giants like OpenAI and Google, whose models—including GPT-5 and Gemini 2.5—have set high benchmarks. OpenAI has also expanded rapidly with infrastructure deals and new products like Sora, its video generation tool. Despite the intense competition, Anthropic continues to grow, serving over 300,000 business customers and maintaining a valuation of $183 billion. The company, ranked No. 4 on CNBC’s 2025 Disruptor 50 list, is preparing to launch an updated Opus model by year-end or early next year. Krieger noted that training for Haiku 4.5 began even as Sonnet 4.5 was being developed, underscoring Anthropic’s “fire on all cylinders” approach. The company is also expanding globally, recently announcing a hiring push overseas to strengthen its international presence. With Haiku 4.5, Anthropic is not just improving a single model—it’s redefining how AI can be deployed at scale, offering a powerful, affordable, and fast option that complements larger models rather than competing with them. This strategic balance between performance, cost, and speed positions Anthropic to lead in the next phase of AI adoption across industries.
