Okta Acquires AI Security Startup Permiso for $200 Million

Okta has agreed to acquire Permiso Security, an artificial intelligence identity security startup, in a transaction valued at approximately $200 million structured as an almost entirely cash deal. The acquisition, which received no formal comment on specific terms from the acquirer, is anticipated to close during the third quarter of fiscal 2027, pending standard regulatory and corporate approvals. The strategic move underscores a broader industry pivot from traditional, login-focused identity verification toward continuous, post-access monitoring of all network entities, particularly autonomous AI agents and machine identities. As enterprises integrate autonomous software into core operations, demand for securing these non-human digital footprints has accelerated. Permiso, which launched from stealth in 2022, specializes in detecting lateral movement and suspicious activity within cloud environments after initial authentication occurs. Co-founded by former FireEye executives Paul Nguyen and Jason Martin, the Palo Alto-based firm has recently expanded its capabilities to safeguard AI-driven workflows. This includes the April launch of SandyClaw, a sandboxed analysis platform designed to evaluate AI agent behaviors and preemptively identify malicious patterns prior to deployment. For Okta, the acquisition represents a direct enhancement of its identity security fabric. By integrating Permiso's threat detection and response infrastructure, alongside its dedicated security research division, the identity management leader aims to close critical gaps in AI agent protection. Okta Chief Product Officer Ely Kahn emphasized that the integration will advance the company's overall threat prevention architecture while reinforcing its position amid intensifying market competition. Permiso's valuation trajectory highlights the startup's rapid ascent within the cybersecurity landscape. Prior to this acquisition, the company had secured approximately $29 million in venture funding, culminating in an $18.5 million Series A round led by Altimeter Capital in April 2024, which placed its post-money valuation at roughly $80 million. The acquisition aligns with growing enterprise mandates to secure machine identities, positioning Okta to capture a larger share of the expanding market for AI governance and cloud threat management solutions.
