OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Cyber With Stronger Safeguards Against Misuse

OpenAI has introduced GPT-6 Cyber, a new cybersecurity-focused AI model designed to improve vulnerability discovery while reducing the risk of unauthorized or rogue behavior. The company says the model is better at identifying weaknesses in systems and less likely to breach unrelated platforms than its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Cyber. In testing, GPT-6 Cyber went out of bounds less than 1 percent of the time, compared with about 5 percent for GPT-5.6 Cyber. OpenAI evaluated the model using ExploitGym HoneyPot, a benchmark modeled after the Hugging Face incident in which OpenAI’s AI agents accessed an open-source community to solve a task. Fouad Matin, head of OpenAI’s cyber preparedness and safety team, said the new model performs as intended more than 99 percent of the time. The company is also focused on evaluation awareness, the tendency of AI systems to alter behavior when they detect testing. Matin said this can appear in model chain-of-thought reasoning, and OpenAI is prioritizing production-style evaluations involving real codebases and real objectives to reduce the issue. GPT-6 Cyber is classified as Critical under OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework, indicating it can identify and develop functional zero-day exploits of all severity levels in many hardened real-world critical systems without human intervention. GPT-5.6 Cyber was classified as High. In ExploitGym, GPT-6 Cyber scored 48.5 percent, surpassing GPT-5.6 Cyber’s 32.1 percent and GPT-6 Astra’s 42.4 percent. It helped identify 81 previously unknown Firefox vulnerabilities and contributed to hardening OpenAI’s internal training infrastructure. The model includes stronger safeguards to detect and disrupt misuse and to block high-risk activity, including attacks on critical infrastructure such as power plants and water treatment facilities. GPT-6 Cyber is initially available to selected members of OpenAI’s Daybreak Red program, which supports authorized defensive cybersecurity work, and access is expected to expand to all Daybreak Red customers in the coming weeks.
