Apple Approves Poke AI Agent

Apple has granted Poke, a Palo Alto-based startup, approval to operate as the first artificial intelligence agent on its Messages for Business platform. Since its March launch, Poke has facilitated approximately 100 million conversations by enabling everyday users to manage calendars, track health metrics, control smart home devices, and edit photos through standard text interfaces. The service previously operated across SMS, Telegram, and select WhatsApp markets, and will now integrate with Apple iMessage. The integration aligns with Apple’s strategy to streamline business-consumer communication through a standardized messaging interface. Unlike traditional consumer applications, the Messages for Business channel allows enterprises and AI-driven services to handle inquiries, scheduling, and support directly within the iMessage ecosystem. To secure approval, Poke underwent a multi-month compliance process that required verifying live support capabilities, clearly labeling the agent as artificial intelligence, and adapting its user interface to match Apple’s design guidelines, including mandatory link previews and standardized button layouts. Founder Marvin von Hagen emphasized that the company’s focus on brand trust and operational transparency facilitated Apple’s endorsement. Financially, the partnership establishes a new revenue stream for Apple, operating on a per-user licensing model. von Hagen noted that Apple’s pricing structure remains significantly lower than competing platforms, citing recent fee adjustments by Meta AI. While Apple has not officially confirmed broader AI agent integrations ahead of its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference, industry speculation suggests the company may expand support for third-party AI models and introduce an AI-optimized Siri. Poke is currently extending invitation-based access to its existing user base, allowing optional migration to the iMessage environment. The approval process underscores Apple’s measured approach to ecosystem integration, prioritizing security, user experience consistency, and transparent AI disclosure. As demand for conversational AI grows, this precedent may accelerate the adoption of AI agents across Apple’s business messaging infrastructure.
