Argonne Collaborates with RIKEN, Fujitsu, and NVIDIA to Advance AI for Science and Computing

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory has launched a significant international partnership with Japan’s RIKEN, Fujitsu Limited, and NVIDIA, signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on January 27 to advance artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) for scientific discovery. This collaboration is a key component of the DOE’s Genesis Mission, a national initiative aimed at leveraging transformative AI to accelerate breakthroughs in science, strengthen national security, and drive innovation in clean energy. Building on a prior agreement between Argonne and RIKEN from 2024, the new partnership brings together four leading institutions to co-develop next-generation computing systems, design and test advanced software, and apply AI to solve complex problems across science and engineering. The collaboration will focus on creating resilient, scalable, and energy-efficient computing architectures capable of handling the most demanding scientific workloads. Argonne Laboratory Director Paul Kearns emphasized the strategic importance of the alliance, calling it a “pivotal step forward” in using AI and HPC to tackle critical challenges in energy, national security, and fundamental research. He highlighted that the partnership is designed to lay the foundation for future computing systems that will power the next wave of scientific discovery, directly supporting the goals of the Genesis Mission. The joint efforts will include regular joint meetings, technical workshops, and community engagement activities to foster knowledge exchange and innovation. Key areas of focus include the development of AI-optimized algorithms, system software for exascale computing, and applications tailored to real-world scientific problems such as climate modeling, materials science, fusion energy research, and advanced manufacturing. RIKEN, Japan’s premier research institution, brings deep expertise in supercomputing and AI, including leadership in the development of the Fugaku supercomputer, one of the world’s most powerful systems. Fujitsu, a global technology leader, contributes its experience in designing high-performance computing hardware and systems integration. NVIDIA, a pioneer in AI and GPU technology, will provide cutting-edge hardware and software tools to accelerate AI training and inference workloads. The collaboration also aims to build a shared ecosystem for AI and HPC research, enabling scientists across the U.S. and Japan to access and test new technologies. By combining resources and expertise, the partners seek to overcome technical barriers such as energy efficiency, data scalability, and system reliability—critical challenges in the era of AI-driven science. This partnership reflects a growing global trend toward international cooperation in advanced computing, especially as AI becomes increasingly central to scientific progress. With the U.S. and Japan investing heavily in next-generation computing infrastructure, this MOU strengthens trans-Pacific ties in science and technology.
