Reddit tightens access to Old Reddit and will discontinue RSS
Reddit has announced further restrictions on eligibility to use its classic web interface, Old Reddit. The new rules will be implemented in the coming months, after which regular users will not only need to be logged into an account but also must have used Old Reddit within the previous six months to continue accessing it. Reddit states that this condition covers the vast majority of existing users; logged-in community moderators are exempt from the recent usage restriction. The company said that previously implemented mandatory login measures have reduced anonymous scraping and automated abuse but have not prevented bots from using newly created, dormant, or abandoned accounts to access Old Reddit. The new restrictions aim to close this gap while preserving the legacy interface that long-term users and moderators rely on. Reddit will also discontinue RSS support on November 13, 2026, citing that RSS has become a common channel for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. Moderators can migrate some alerts to Devvit applications such as Discord Relay, but there is currently no alternative for regular users subscribing to RSS feeds from communities they do not moderate. Additionally, applications and bots using the public data API need to migrate to the Reddit Developer Platform. Projects that have not registered or communicated with Reddit about migration will progressively lose API access starting January 12, 2027, with all remaining public API access ending in March 2027.
