Jensen Huang: Now an 'incredible time' for software

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared that the current era represents an incredible opportunity for software companies, directly challenging prevailing fears of a massive industry collapse known as a "Saaspocalypse." Speaking at a keynote presentation during Computex in Taiwan, Huang argued that the emergence of agentic AI will not render software firms obsolete but will instead drive unprecedented demand for their tools. Agentic AI refers to systems capable of executing complex tasks with minimal human intervention. While critics suggest that these autonomous agents will replace human labor and the software controlling it, Huang contends the opposite is true. He noted that as the number of AI agents grows, so too will their reliance on external tools to accomplish work. The challenge, according to Huang, is not the extinction of software but the need for developers to adapt their products so they can be effectively utilized by these agents. This optimistic outlook contrasts sharply with recent market sentiment. Concerns that AI would disrupt business models of major enterprise firms like Salesforce and Workday have triggered a significant decline in software stock values. Shares of industry leaders including Atlassian, Salesforce, and SAP have all dropped by more than 20 percent since the beginning of the year. This volatility follows successful experiments by various organizations and journalists attempting to build functional alternatives to popular platforms like Asana and Wix using artificial intelligence, fueling anxiety about the future of traditional application software. Huang is not the first industry leader to dismiss the notion of a software apocalypse. In February, during a Cisco AI event, he labeled the idea that AI would replace software companies as the most illogical concept in the industry, asserting that time would prove his stance correct. His latest remarks at Computex reinforce his long-standing belief that AI and software are complementary forces rather than competitive ones. This perspective aligns with comments from other AI executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Both leaders have indicated that while software companies must evolve and adapt their strategies to accommodate the new AI landscape, they will not become obsolete in the foreseeable future. The consensus among these tech leaders suggests that the integration of AI agents will transform how software is accessed and used, creating a new paradigm where software remains a critical infrastructure layer for autonomous systems.
