India's app market booms as global platforms seize gains

India's mobile application market is experiencing a surge in revenue, with in-app purchases surpassing $300 million in the first quarter of the year, marking a 33 percent increase compared to the previous year. Despite this growth, the majority of financial gains are being captured by global technology platforms rather than domestic entities. According to data from Sensor Tower, non-gaming applications drove this expansion, contributing over $200 million in revenue, a 44 percent year-over-year rise. Key categories fueling this trend include utilities, video streaming, and generative artificial intelligence. The annual revenue from in-app purchases in India has climbed from $520 million in 2021 to exceed $1 billion in 2025, with projections suggesting a further increase to $1.25 billion this year. While the volume of app downloads has stabilized at approximately 25 billion annually, user engagement has deepened, with increased time spent on apps and a growing willingness to pay for digital services. This shift indicates a maturing market where monetization is becoming more robust alongside usage habits. However, the distribution of earnings highlights a dominance by international players. In the first quarter, top revenue generators included Google One, Facebook, ChatGPT, and YouTube. While domestic companies such as JioHotstar and SonyLIV held strong positions in the video streaming sector, global brands led in other high-value categories. A similar pattern emerged in downloads, where ChatGPT, Instagram, and the Chinese short-drama app FreeReels topped the rankings, followed by Indian apps like Story TV, JioHotstar, and Meesho. Donny Kristianto, a principal market insights manager at Sensor Tower, noted that while the market has matured on the download side, monetization is strengthening as digital payment infrastructure becomes more embedded in daily life. Nevertheless, India remains a low-spending market relative to global peers, generating approximately $0.03 in revenue per download. This figure is significantly lower than the average in Southeast Asia and Latin America, which exceeds $0.20 per download. Spending remains concentrated in a few established segments, particularly productivity, social media, and video streaming. Video streaming alone accounts for roughly half of the top ten revenue-generating applications, demonstrating its significant monetization power. Yet, emerging trends suggest substantial room for growth. Downloads for generative AI applications jumped 69 percent year-over-year, with ChatGPT ranking among the highest in both installs and revenue. India currently stands as ChatGPT's largest user base globally, and other AI applications are rapidly gaining traction. Short drama platforms are experiencing even more explosive growth, with downloads increasing by over 400 percent, led by apps like FreeReels. This rapid expansion indicates that the Indian app market is still in its early stages of monetization, even as new categories evolve consumer spending habits. The combination of deepening user engagement and the introduction of novel content formats points to a future where spending per user may rise, though global platforms are likely to continue capturing the majority of these emerging revenues.
