Academy for Mathematical Sciences Identifies AI-Enabled Research Priorities

The UK-based Academy for the Mathematical Sciences has released a report titled “The mathematical sciences in an AI-enabled world,” examining how recent advances in artificial intelligence are reshaping mathematical research and its applications. The report highlights new opportunities for discovery, verification and the wider use of mathematics across science, industry and society, while also considering associated risks and the support and infrastructure needed to maximise benefits. A central theme is that as AI systems become more capable of performing technical mathematical tasks, human expertise will remain essential. Mathematicians will continue to play a key role in identifying promising research questions, contributing core ideas, assessing the reliability of AI-generated results, deepening mathematical understanding and translating discoveries into practical use. The report sets out priorities for the mathematical community, including education and skills development, independent verification, access to AI capabilities, updated approaches to research assessment and publication, and stronger infrastructure for supporting mathematical knowledge. It also outlines areas for action in the near term and over the coming years.
