Nvidia and Microsoft Invest in Wayve as AI-Powered Self-Driving Startup Reaches $8.6B Valuation
Nvidia and Microsoft have joined forces to back Wayve, the U.K.-based autonomous driving startup, as it reaches a $8.6 billion valuation. Founded in 2017, Wayve specializes in developing AI-powered software for self-driving vehicles and has emerged as one of Europe’s most valuable tech startups. Prior to this latest funding round, Wayve had raised over $1 billion from investors. The company is advancing its vision of fully autonomous driving through machine learning and real-time decision-making systems, rather than relying solely on detailed maps and pre-programmed rules. In 2025, Wayve announced a major partnership with Nissan to integrate its AI-driven driver-assistance technology into future Nissan vehicles, with the first models featuring the system expected to launch in 2027. The company also plans to launch public robotaxi trials in London in 2026, with plans for a global rollout across more than 10 markets in the following years. Despite years of promises, full autonomy—defined as Level 5, where vehicles operate without any human intervention in all conditions—has remained out of reach due to persistent technical and regulatory challenges. However, recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence have reignited optimism in the sector. This momentum was underscored earlier this week when Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving unit, began offering rides to the public in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando. Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has increasingly positioned the company as a leader in autonomous mobility, and Amazon’s Zoox launched public rides in 2025, marking another milestone in the race to bring self-driving technology to consumers. Wayve’s growing support from industry giants like Nvidia and Microsoft reflects confidence in its AI-first approach and its potential to accelerate the transition toward safe, scalable, and fully autonomous transportation.
