Figma CEO Dylan Field Says AI Won’t Replace Jobs, Emphasizes Human-AI Collaboration and Company Hiring Surge
Figma CEO Dylan Field says AI is not a threat to jobs and emphasized that the company is actively hiring across multiple departments. Speaking on Lenny’s podcast, Field expressed confidence that workers should view AI as a tool for growth rather than a replacement. He noted that a recent Figma survey of 1,199 professionals—including designers, product managers, developers, researchers, and marketers—found that nearly 60% reported spending more time on high-value tasks due to AI, while almost 70% said they were more productive or efficient overall. Field, who co-founded Figma in 2012 with Evan Wallace, stressed the importance of adapting to AI rather than fearing it. He encouraged people to see AI as a way to explore new possibilities and deepen human creativity. Figma, based in San Francisco, builds collaborative design tools used to create websites, apps, and digital products. The company went public in July in a highly successful IPO and now has a market cap of nearly $30 billion. Despite exploring ways to use AI to boost efficiency and reduce costs, Field said the company’s focus remains on how AI can unlock new opportunities. He highlighted that Figma is expanding its workforce, with over 1,600 employees, and continues to add roles across departments. This hiring momentum reflects confidence in the company’s long-term growth, even as AI reshapes the tech landscape. Field has consistently maintained that AI should enhance human work, not replace it. On a recent episode of the Rapid Response podcast, he said designers play a crucial role in guiding AI’s development and that the technology alone cannot replicate human insight. He emphasized the need to eliminate repetitive, low-value tasks—what he calls “drudgery”—from the design process, allowing teams to focus on innovation and creativity. For Field, AI is not about replacing people but about empowering them to do more meaningful work.
