OpenAI Targets App Store Model With New ChatGPT Features
OpenAI recently outlined a strategic pivot at its developer conference, targeting the traditional app store ecosystem by transforming ChatGPT into a centralized software discovery and execution platform. With ChatGPT now reaching 1.2 billion weekly users, the company aims to shift application distribution from standalone mobile and desktop environments to an integrated conversational interface. The updated architecture enables ChatGPT to surface contextual app recommendations directly within active conversations. Upon user consent, third-party tools will launch as interactive panels inside the chat window, eliminating the need to switch between applications. To facilitate this, OpenAI has expanded its plugin framework to support native extensions, allowing developers to build AI-optimized versions of their services that function seamlessly alongside conversational AI. Central to this ecosystem is the introduction of a unified identity layer. The new Sign in with ChatGPT credential system permits users to carry their subscription and allocated computational resources across partner applications. Sixteen initial partners, including Notion, Vercel, and Devin, will support the feature at launch. Concurrently, OpenAI unveiled an enterprise marketplace featuring over thirty providers such as Adobe, Salesforce, and CrowdStrike. Organizations will be able to apply existing OpenAI commitments toward approved partner software, while developers benefit from a streamlined review pipeline that offers transparent tracking and human escalation options. The platform shift is further accelerated by the introduction of autonomous AI agents, branded as Dots. Each agent operates on dedicated cloud infrastructure with an independent browser and computing environment, capable of executing complex workflows across OpenAI’s growing network of more than four thousand integrated applications. These agents can perform proactive background research in read-only modes and initiate tasks with explicit user approval, fundamentally altering how users interact with digital tools. Instead of manually selecting software for specific jobs, users will delegate objectives to agents that autonomously assemble and deploy the necessary resources. While the infrastructure for discovery, distribution, and identity management is now established, OpenAI did not announce immediate billing mechanisms or revenue-sharing protocols comparable to those governing traditional app ecosystems. The company’s immediate focus remains on establishing the foundational interface and developer tooling required to transition software consumption away from walled garden storefronts. By embedding application execution within a widely adopted conversational AI environment and empowering autonomous agents to navigate digital workflows, OpenAI is laying the groundwork for a decentralized software distribution model that prioritizes contextual utility over traditional application stores.
