OpenAI Launches Data Residency Program in Asia to Enhance Local Compliance and Security
OpenAI has launched a new data residency program in Asia, following the introduction of a similar initiative in Europe earlier this year in February. The program is designed to help Asian organizations comply with local data sovereignty laws while using OpenAI's products, including ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the OpenAI API. As part of this effort, eligible API customers and new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu subscribers can now choose to store their data at rest in supported countries, such as Japan, India, Singapore, and South Korea. In a blog post, OpenAI emphasized that the data residency program ensures users’ data remains confidential, secure, and entirely under their control. "For the API platform and ChatGPT business products, your data is your data," the company stated. "This program further enhances data control for organizations." The roll-out of the Asia data residency program reflects OpenAI's broader strategy to expand its global footprint. This week, the company also unveiled "OpenAI for Countries," an initiative aimed at building the necessary infrastructure to better serve international clients. By addressing regional data regulations and enhancing data control, OpenAI is positioning itself to meet the growing demand for AI solutions across different markets, ensuring that businesses and educational institutions can leverage its cutting-edge technology while adhering to local legal frameworks.
