Microsoft Reports $10 Billion in OpenAI-Related Revenue

Microsoft disclosed in its quarterly earnings report for the quarter ending September 30, 2026, that revenue related to its commercial arrangement with OpenAI amounted to $10 billion, including revenue share payments. Microsoft’s total revenue for the quarter was $92.279 billion, with the former accounting for approximately 10.8%. This quarter also marked the first quarter of Microsoft’s fiscal year 2027. The report also showed that as of the end of September, Microsoft’s accounts receivable from OpenAI stood at $7.2 billion, up from $6 billion at the end of June. Accounts receivable represent amounts owed from previous transactions that are yet to be collected and cannot be added to the $10 billion in revenue recognized in the current quarter. Microsoft did not disclose how much of this revenue was contributed by Azure cloud services versus revenue sharing, making it impossible to deduce the specific share payments made by OpenAI to Microsoft based on this information. Simply multiplying the current quarter’s revenue by four yields an annualized figure of $40 billion, but this is not Microsoft’s revenue forecast for the next year. Although the two companies have gradually relaxed the exclusivity arrangements in their early partnership and compete in some customer markets, their financial ties remain close. Microsoft stated in its filings that it holds approximately 24% equity in OpenAI on a converted basis and will continue to receive revenue sharing. The aforementioned figures reflect Microsoft’s recognized related revenue, not OpenAI’s own quarterly revenue.
