Bluesky launches Attie AI for custom feeds
Bluesky has launched Attie, a new standalone AI application designed to allow users to create custom social feeds using natural language commands rather than code. Unveiled at the recent Atmosphere conference, the app represents a shift for the social network from simply hosting content to empowering users with AI-driven curation tools. The launch was presented by Jay Graber, Bluesky's chief innovation officer, and CTO Paul Frazee. While Graber previously served as CEO, she has returned to a product-focused role to lead this initiative, which utilizes Anthropic's Claude model under the hood. Attie functions as an agent that interacts with users to understand their preferences and curate content accordingly. By connecting to the Atmosphere ecosystem via the AT Protocol, the application accesses open data across different apps to build a personalized understanding of the user. Instead of manually configuring algorithms or writing complex code, users can simply chat with Attie to define what kind of posts they wish to see or repost. These custom feeds are initially built within the Attie interface but are designed to be accessible within the main Bluesky app and other applications running on the AT Protocol. Interim CEO Toni Schneider emphasized that Attie is not a feature of the existing Bluesky app but a separate product developed by Graber's new team. The goal is to lower the barrier to entry for building social software, allowing anyone to shape their digital experience without technical expertise. Graber stated that current AI models on major platforms often prioritize platform retention and data harvesting. In contrast, Attie aims to serve the user by placing control directly in their hands through an open protocol. The launch coincides with Bluesky's announcement of an additional $100 million in funding, bringing its financial runway to over three years. This capital provides stability for the growing user base of 43.4 million and funds future development efforts. Key priorities include enhancing privacy controls within the protocol and exploring sustainable monetization strategies. Schneider clarified that despite backing from investors interested in cryptocurrency, the platform has no plans to integrate crypto or payment features, aiming instead to avoid scams and maintain focus on decentralized social interaction. Potential monetization models under discussion include subscriptions and hosting services for community builders, drawing parallels to the WordPress ecosystem where decentralized components generate significant value through interoperability. Schneider noted that the AT Protocol is designed to function like an open system where independent apps and services can coexist and work together. Attie itself is currently in a private beta stage, with conference attendees serving as the initial testers. Future iterations may enable users to "vibe-code" entire social applications, further expanding the ecosystem's capabilities. The project underscores Bluesky's commitment to building a user-centric internet where AI tools enhance personal agency rather than corporate control.
