Waze Rolls Out Custom Navigation and Gemini AI Features
Waze has announced a global rollout of significant platform updates introducing advanced route customization, safety enhancements for two-wheeled riders, and integrated Gemini artificial intelligence capabilities. The update, now available on Android and iOS, transforms the navigation application from a traditional routing tool into an adaptive, AI-driven travel companion designed to accommodate diverse commuting preferences and environmental conditions. Central to the update is the introduction of Motorcycle Mode, a specialized routing feature developed to address the unique requirements of two-wheeler commuters. Powered by machine learning algorithms and supplemented by data from dedicated motorcycle map editors, the mode calculates optimized paths that utilize narrower roadways while flagging terrain-specific hazards such as potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks, narrow bridges, and abrupt shoulder endings. The feature leverages real-time traffic data to deliver precise estimated times of arrival. Motorcycle Mode is currently live in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines, with additional regional deployments scheduled in the coming months. For general drivers, Waze has implemented a Personalized Navigation system that analyzes historical trip data to prioritize routes aligning with individual driving habits. Commuters favoring highway travel will receive those options ahead of complex urban street networks, while those preferring alternative paths retain full control through straightforward settings adjustments. The global rollout applies to both iOS and Android users. Complementing these routing advancements is the launch of Less Chatty Mode, which reduces auditory distractions for users prioritizing in-car audio entertainment. When activated, the system minimizes routine voice guidance while preserving essential safety notifications for upcoming turns, lane changes, and traffic hazards. This feature, alongside Personalized Navigation, is available worldwide on both mobile platforms. Underpinning these enhancements is an expanded integration with Google Gemini, which infuses the application with deeper conversational intelligence and contextual awareness. This AI layer enables more natural user interactions and anticipates driver needs based on location, time, and travel patterns. Collectively, the updates signal a strategic shift toward highly individualized, safety-conscious navigation solutions that leverage community-sourced mapping data and generative artificial intelligence to redefine urban mobility.
