Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Has 36 Direct Reports Amid Rapid Growth and AI Boom

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has 36 direct reports as of October, according to an internal organizational list obtained by Business Insider, highlighting the breadth of leadership under his command. This number reflects Huang’s distinctive leadership style, which emphasizes minimal hierarchy and rapid information flow across the company. Huang, known for his hands-on approach and high expectations, has previously stated in a March 2024 interview at Stanford that he had 55 direct reports, noting that many of them are compensated similarly. At the 2023 New York Times DealBook Summit, he explained that having more direct reports reduces organizational layers, enabling faster decision-making and empowering employees with access to critical information. Among the executives reporting directly to Huang are key figures who have shaped Nvidia’s rise as a dominant force in AI and high-performance computing. These include Ian Buck, the architect behind the revolutionary CUDA software platform; CTO Michael Kagan; and chief scientist Bill Dally. Other top leaders include co-founder Chris Malachowsky, CFO Colette Kress, and EVP of operations Debora Shoquist. The list also features executives leading major business units such as DGX Cloud, GPU engineering, networking, automotive, and enterprise AI. Notable names include Andrew Bell, SVP of engineering; Jay Puri, EVP of worldwide field operations; and Justin Boitano, VP of enterprise AI. Nvidia’s rapid expansion during the AI boom has driven its workforce growth, and Huang’s demanding work ethic has helped foster a culture of intensity and innovation. Despite the large number of direct reports, Huang avoids scheduled one-on-one meetings with his leaders, believing this helps information spread more freely. He has said he will drop everything to meet with a direct report if requested. The structure stands in contrast to other tech leaders. Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg relies on a “core army” of around 30 key lieutenants, though not all report directly to him. Elon Musk has 19 direct reports at Tesla and five at xAI. Nvidia has not commented on the list or whether the current structure reflects a shift from past organizational models. The company continues to grow rapidly, and Huang’s leadership remains central to its strategy and execution in the global AI race.
