Microsoft Opens Preorders for $5,999 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box
Microsoft has opened preorders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a specialized workstation priced at $5,999. Built for AI developers and software engineers, the machine integrates Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark platform with 128GB of unified memory and a 100-watt thermal envelope. Its distinctive chassis is constructed from 3D-printed anodized aluminum that doubles as an integrated heatsink, featuring a vent layout reminiscent of the Xbox Series X. Although the hardware supports local gaming, Microsoft explicitly markets the unit for on-device artificial intelligence workflows. The system is engineered to execute inference for models exceeding 120 billion parameters, enabling engineers to test algorithms, prototype autonomous agents, and run AI coding assistants without cloud dependency. As a member of Microsoft’s Project Zenith ecosystem, the Dev Box launches with a developer-optimized Windows 11 Pro configuration. The preinstalled toolkit includes Visual Studio Code, Git, the GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot, Windows Subsystem for Linux, Python, and Node.js. By combining substantial on-device memory, dedicated Tensor cores, and a streamlined professional software stack, Microsoft addresses the latency and data privacy challenges inherent in distributed machine learning development. The device is now available for preorder, positioning itself as a centralized hardware solution for research teams and enterprise engineering departments requiring localized, high-throughput AI processing.
