Generalist AI Targets $3 Billion Valuation in Funding Talks
Generalist AI, a robotics artificial intelligence startup, is currently in negotiations to secure a new funding round that would elevate its valuation to 3 billion dollars. The latest round is expected to be led by venture capital firm 8VC, according to individuals familiar with the discussions. This development arrives merely a month after the company closed a 400 million dollar round that valued Generalist at 2 billion dollars. The previous investment, spearheaded by Radical Ventures, also included participation from Union Square Ventures, Nvidia, and Bezos Expeditions. Founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, alongside ex-Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry, Generalist AI operates at the forefront of the physical AI sector. The company focuses exclusively on developing the underlying intelligence systems that operate across diverse robotic platforms, deliberately avoiding hardware manufacturing. Its core technology, recently introduced as the GEN-1 model, is engineered to enable robots to comprehend and execute fundamental physical tasks in varied environments, including industrial facilities, laboratories, domestic settings, and space exploration missions. Public demonstrations have already showcased the software guiding machines through complex dexterity challenges such as laundry folding, object sorting, and culinary mixing. The fresh capital push underscores intense institutional appetite for physical AI, a domain encompassing intelligent systems capable of autonomous real-world interaction. Generalist AI operates within a highly competitive landscape, facing well-capitalized peers including Physical Intelligence, which recently surpassed an 11 billion dollar valuation, and Skild AI, which crossed the 14 billion dollar threshold. Other notable competitors vying for market share include Field AI and Genesis AI. The startup’s financial backing is further bolstered by a prominent roster of angel investors, featuring Xiaomi co-founder Bin Lin, Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li, and AngelList co-founder Naval Ravikant. As the physical AI race accelerates, Generalist AI’s ability to deliver versatile, cross-platform robotic intelligence will likely dictate its market positioning and long-term trajectory.
