Google's Character.AI Founder Noam Shazeer Joins OpenAI
Noam Shazeer, a foundational figure in artificial intelligence and former co-lead of Google’s Gemini model, has departed Google to join OpenAI. The announcement, confirmed via social media on Wednesday, marks a significant talent shift in the highly competitive AI sector. Shazeer, who originally joined Google in 2000, previously stepped away for three years to co-found Character.AI. Google later reengaged the startup’s leadership in 2024, securing non-exclusive technology rights through a reported $2.7 billion arrangement that stipulated Shazeer’s return to the tech giant. Character.AI continues to operate as an independent entity. Shazeer’s transition is a strategic acquisition for OpenAI as it advances toward its initial public offering. A co-author of a pivotal 2017 research paper that catalyzed modern large language model development, Shazeer brings decades of foundational expertise to the ChatGPT developer. His move underscores intensifying recruitment efforts across the industry, with major laboratories including OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic deploying substantial financial incentives and complex acquisition structures to secure elite AI researchers and engineers. In his farewell message, Shazeer expressed pride in his tenure at Google and the collaborative achievements of its teams, while acknowledging the difficulty of the transition and anticipating future work with OpenAI. This relocation reinforces the ongoing realignment of top-tier talent within the global artificial intelligence landscape.
