Google Reveals Early Moves: Android 17, Aluminium OS, and Gemini Unveiled in New Forms
Although Google I/O remains one week away, major announcements have already arrived early on May 12. "Android Show: I/O Edition" will be streamed live via YouTube and its official website. While this session lasts approximately 20 minutes compared to the two-hour main keynote, it packs an immense amount of information. The headlining Android 17 reveal will unveil several new features: "App Bubbles," which support windowed drag-and-drop functionality, alongside enhanced privacy permissions including single-use location sharing and background location notifications. A translucent glass-textured robot featured in the trailer previously sparked speculation about emulating iOS 26, but Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, has explicitly denied such claims. On the AI front, updates to the Gemini app will roll out comprehensively, featuring a brand-new pill-shaped input box that integrates more deeply with the Android system. The PC operating system Aluminium OS may receive its first official demonstration soon. This hybrid system blending elements of both Android and ChromeOS, due to its heavy resource demands, might temporarily lack compatibility with older Chromebooks, while full enterprise deployment could wait until 2028. Additionally, the headline-grabbing preview of the Android XR ecosystem might also be released ahead of schedule or reserved for the main stage announcement.
