In a recently published blog post, Nadella argued that corporate clients are effectively paying for AI intelligence twice: first through subscription or token fees, and second by surrendering highly sensitive business information through prompts, agent interactions, and model corrections. He emphasized that every customer interaction feeds institutional knowledge into the providers' systems, inadvertently training competitors with proprietary insights that would otherwise be impossible to acquire. Nadella criticized the asymmetry in data usage rights, noting that while model developers freely scrape public internet data for training, they frequently impose restrictive terms on enterprise distillation and data retention. According to Idit Levine, CEO of Solo.io, a growing number of large organizations are transitioning from proprietary cloud models to open-source alternatives deployed on-premise. Enterprises report that these self-hosted models deliver comparable performance at a fraction of the cost while preserving full data sovereignty. Market data supports this migration. Platforms facilitating model routing, including Vercel and OpenRouter, have recorded surges in open-source traffic, which recently accounted for 29 percent of requests handled by Vercel's gateway. The Linux Foundation's Agentgateway initiative, backed by Solo.io's infrastructure, further validates the push toward decentralized, interoperable AI architectures.
