OpenAI has unveiled the Codex Micro, a $230 mini keyboard engineered in collaboration with Work Louder, marking the company's entry into hardware and a decisive push into the developer ecosystem. Designed specifically for power users of OpenAI's coding agent, the device offers tactile controls intended to streamline multi-agent orchestration and workflow efficiency. The Codex Micro features six illuminated keys that provide real-time status indicators for active agents and allow users to switch between them seamlessly. Navigation is managed via a dedicated joystick, while a rotary dial enables users to adjust an agent's reasoning level. The keyboard includes a built-in voice recorder for audio prompts, customizable shortcut keys for frequent Codex actions, and a choice of clicky or silent mechanical switch options. This hardware release reinforces OpenAI's aggressive strategy to establish Codex as a core component of its platform. The company has recently merged Codex capabilities into the ChatGPT desktop application, supported by extensive advertising campaigns and free usage incentives. Thibault Sottiaux, Codex's engineering lead, reported that ChatGPT Work and Codex have collectively reached 8 million active users, highlighting rapid adoption among technical audiences. The launch serves as a tangible signal of OpenAI's commitment to reducing friction for AI developers and expanding the utility of its coding tools. OpenAI distinguished the Codex Micro from a previously rumored hardware collaboration with designer Jony Ive. CFO Suw Charman-Anderson confirmed that the Jony Ive project remains in development and is expected to be revealed by the end of the year.
