Corning signs Amazon AI deal

Corning has entered a multi-year agreement with Amazon to supply optical fiber and networking infrastructure for the e-commerce giant’s expanding artificial intelligence data centers across the United States. Announced Monday, the contract underscores the intensifying demand for high-speed connectivity solutions that underpin modern AI compute operations. Following the announcement, Corning shares rose 9 percent, while Amazon’s stock gained approximately 1 percent. The agreement will drive the creation of 1,000 manufacturing positions at Corning’s North Carolina facilities, alongside an expansion of its fiber optic technician training program. Amazon Web Services Chief Executive Matt Garman emphasized that the partnership strengthens cloud infrastructure reliability, noting that AWS investments in the state have already supported more than 26,000 jobs. This arrangement builds upon Amazon’s 2023 commitment to invest $10 billion in new North Carolina data center capacity. The deal capitalizes on surging procurement from hyperscalers and AI developers seeking to interconnect server racks, high-performance computing chips, and distributed data centers. Optical fiber remains a foundational element of this architecture, and Corning’s transmission technology continues to scale alongside industry growth. The company’s stock has more than doubled this year and increased nearly sixfold since late 2023, reflecting sustained investor confidence in AI-driven telecommunications infrastructure. This contract extends a broader trend of major technology firms securing dedicated optical manufacturing capacity from Corning. In May, Nvidia committed up to $3.2 billion to fund three new advanced manufacturing plants, and in January, Meta pledged up to $6 billion to finance a dedicated optical cable facility in Hickory, North Carolina, which is projected to generate approximately 1,000 additional jobs. While Corning remains widely recognized for its consumer electronics display glass production, optical communications currently represents its largest and fastest-growing revenue segment. The agreement also aligns with federal initiatives encouraging domestic reshoring of critical technology supply chains. Corning Chief Executive Wendell Weeks described the Amazon partnership as a milestone for American manufacturing and a step toward building a more resilient domestic production base. Although the majority of Corning’s operations remain international, Weeks confirmed that hyperscalers are projected to become the company’s largest customer segment by next year. The agreement reinforces Corning’s strategic pivot toward AI infrastructure, securing long-term demand while positioning the company as a primary enabler of domestic cloud computing expansion.
